Study Day - A Homage to the Myths and Legends of Ancient Greece and Rome

Historic Decoration invites you to Syon house for a talk by the eminent art historian John Hardy.  His long and distinguished career in the study of Georgian architecture and furniture has spanned 60 years and includes working for the V&A museum, Osterley House, Ham House and Christies

John will explore the collaboration between the architect Robert Adam and his patrons the 1st Duke and Duchess of Northumberland in the 1760s.  The Duke was an erudite antiquarian, who enthusiastically followed the archaeological discoveries underway in Italy at that time.

His brief to Robert Adam was to transform the out-dated interiors of the existing Tudor house into a suite of rooms to rival the splendour of the Imperial villas built at the height of the Roman Empire.

The dialogue and dynamic between these two accomplished visionaries resulted in one of the most spectacular neo - classical interiors of the 18th century and led to the Adam Style dominating the British Decorative Arts over the following two decades.

 Enchanted Woodland

As the nights draw in, Syon Park once again hosts the Enchanted Woodland, which sees the 600-year-old gardens transformed by a display of lights and music.

Now in its 15th year the trail winds through the arboretum, passing the sixteenth century Syon House, and ends at the spectacular Great Conservatory.

An array of lighting effects – from high-tech lasers to low tech candles – illuminate the visitor’s way through the trees. The event is put together by a team of lighting designers and Syon staff so you can even ask them about the trees!
