It's London Tree Week!

 27th May to 4th June

London Tree Week is part of the London Tree Partnership’s work to protect and increase the number of trees in London. It is coordinated by the environment team at the Greater London Authority.

Pocahontas lived in a cottage in Brentford 400 years ago during her visit to England. She knew George Percy, brother of Henry, 10th Earl of Northumberland from his time in the Jamestown colony in Virginia.  She enjoyed Syon Park and the gardens whilst she was here. There are hundreds of trees out in the gardens from all over the world, and native to the UK.  We also have trees that are native to Virginia, USA and Pocahontas would have been familiar with those species during her childhood in order to gather nuts, fruits, berries, and use the bark for dyes, baskets and medicines.

See if you can find the silver feather signs on the trees - Tree Trail

Pocahontas

(Pocahontas after Simon van de Passe by kind permission of NPG/Smithsonian Institute)

This season we’re going back 400 years to the time of Pocahontas and her visit to England.

The story of Pocahontas and her connection to the Percy family is an important one. During this spring and summer season we will be offering specialist tours and events about Pocahontas; her time here in Brentford and what life was like during the Jacobean era.
