Created by the 3rd Duke in the 1820s to provide a service corridor, today it contains many interesting royal (including a rare portrait of King Henry VIII’s elder brother, Prince Arthur) and family portraits. The map dated 1635 by Moses Glover of the ‘Istelworth Hundred’ and the ‘Mannor at Sion’ and Jan Griffier’s painting of Syon and its surroundings are of particular interest. So to is ‘Belshazzar’s Feast’ by John ‘Mad’ Martin (1789-1854) which is painted on glass, so that lit from behind, it could be displayed in his window as an advertisement to the original oil painting inside his studio.
